Choosing the right nozzle for your blasting equipment

Knowing which blast nozzle is best can be difficult – it all depends on the size of your compressor and its production capabilities. If you choose one with an overly small bore, the blasting capacity will be reduced. Opt for a nozzle with too big of a bore, and it’ll lack the pressure to blast efficiently.

An important factor to consider when selecting a blasting nozzle is the shape. Nozzles usually come in two variations: straight bore and Venturi.

When compressed air enters the converging end of a straight nozzle, it accelerates the abrasive particles and they exit in a tight stream to produce a narrow, concentrated blast pattern upon impact. Venturi nozzles, on the other hand, feature a converging entry and diverging exit. Thanks to the angled shape of the diverging end, the flow spreads out and produces a large blast pattern.

When choosing a blast nozzle, it’s also worth considering the material it’s made from and its price tag. For instance, harder materials (e.g. boron) tend to be the most expensive to repair but more resistant to wear.

Tungsten carbide and silicon carbide nozzles are much more affordable, impact-resistant and, in most cases, lighter. Silicon carbide nozzles are long-lasting, whilst tungsten nozzles are an excellent choice for blasting glass and other mineral abrasives.
